“Our Grevy’s Zebra Scouts, Ambassadors and Warriors spend their time in the bush patrolling the areas where they live and collecting data on Grevy’s zebra sightings”

CITIZEN SCIENCE

The Trust has long-term programs for monitoring and protecting the Grevy’s zebra, as well as raising local awareness. It is staffed by more than 55 local pastoralists in the capacity of Grevy’s Zebra Scouts, Ambassadors or Warriors, who spend their time in the bush patrolling the areas where they live. They collect scientific data; conduct conservation education outreach to schools and villages; and, during times of environmental stress, work with their families and fellow community members to manage critical water sources for the zebras.

Data Collection

Each year we hold Grevy’s Zebra Scout, Ambassador and Warrior workshops to review the results of the data collected to date. The teams make recommendations for Grevy’s zebra conservation based on these results as well as their local knowledge. Community Conservancy Managers affiliated with the programs and our other field partners also actively participate in drawing up management recommendations.

Our data sheets are visual thus allowing for non-literate members of the community the chance to be employed through our programs. They are taught the tally system for recording numbers and how to store waypoints in their GPS unit for later downloading by our field team. Most of our non-literate team members have taught themselves to write with the help of educated members in their families.

In 2009 we published a paper on our citizen science in Biological Conservation which showed that the Grevy’s Zebra Scouts’ data are providing valuable results for conservation planning.

Annual Workshops

Each year we hold Grevy’s Zebra Scout, Ambassador and Warrior workshops to review the results of the data collected to date. The teams make recommendations for Grevy’s zebra conservation based on these results as well as their local knowledge. Community Conservancy Managers affiliated with the programs and our other field partners also actively participate in drawing up management recommendations.

Dissemination of the results from these workshops back to the communities where are team members are based provides an open forum for discussion of management solutions and sustains a high level of awareness.
